What is a Certificate Authority (CA) in a PKI?

A Certificate Authority (CA) is the trusted entity within a PKI that verifies identities and issues the digital certificates binding those identities to public keys. Every certificate a CA issues is signed with the CA's own private key, so anyone who trusts the CA's root certificate automatically extends that trust to every certificate it has signed. In an enterprise context, the CA sits at the center of the entire chain of trust for users, devices, applications, and services.

Core responsibilities of a CA:

  • Identity verification: Confirming that a certificate requester is who or what it claims to be, according to a defined certificate policy.
  • Certificate issuance: Signing and distributing certificates that bind verified identities to public keys.
  • Lifecycle management: Tracking certificate validity periods and issuing renewals before expiry.
  • Revocation: Publishing certificate status through CRLs or OCSP so relying parties can detect certificates that must no longer be trusted.

Cryptas's primeID CERTIFY platform operates as the CA engine within an enterprise PKI, allowing organizations to run one or more CA hierarchies centrally while keeping CA signing keys protected inside hardware security modules.

Role of a CA at a Glance

  • Anchors trust for every certificate issued beneath it
  • Verifies identity before binding it to a public key
  • Keeps enterprise PKI centrally governed rather than ad hoc
